Some misinformed healthcare professionals will tell you to avoid all sugars. That’s not very helpful advice since most of will have some type of sweetener in our diets. It’s also inaccurate advice that makes it nearly impossible for people to make smart decisions about their health.

When it comes to sweeteners, we need to understand the differences between organic sugars and other options. The power of organic sugar means that it’s always the healthier option. Here are three reasons why.

Artificial Sweeteners Can Make You Gain Weight

If you like to sweeten your coffee, tea or other beverages, you may think that zero-calorie artificial sweeteners are a healthier choice than sugar. After all, the artificial sweetener doesn’t have any calories, so it can’t make you gain weight, right?

Wrong. Several studies link artificial sweeteners to gaining weight. Instead of choosing the pink or blue packet, our fave at Ivory Dental Centre is to use just one pack (shucks) organic sugar in our drinks.

Keep in mind that organic sugar does contain a lot of calories, so you don’t want to use too much of it. Given a choice, though, your body will respond better to real, organic sugar than the fake stuff that doesn’t contain any calories.

Always Choose Organic Sugar Over High Fructose Corn Syrup

Food manufacturers love high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) because it’s easy and cheap to make. While some industry experts, most of whom work for the food manufacturers that use HFCS, say there isn’t a difference between organic sugar and HFCS, science takes a different position.

Humans have eaten organic cane sugar for thousands of years. Over that time, the human body learned how to process the sugar. HFCS, however, has only been around for about 150 years. By evolutionary standards, HFCS is a brand new addition to the human diet. Unfortunately, the human body doesn’t know what to do with it.

Unlike cane sugar, HFCS remains stable in acidic environments (such as your stomach) and contains massive amounts of fructose and glucose. As a result, HFCS can cause blood sugar to skyrocket briefly before it crashes. Eventually, the rapid ups and downs can lead to diabetes.

Organic Sugar Can Accompany Healthful Foods

Nothing that contains HFCS or artificial sweeteners are considered healthy. Potentially, maaaybe, Stevia is a rare exception, but even it needs more research. When you consume HFCS or artificial sweeteners, you never give your body the nutrition that it needs.

Natural sugar, however, often comes from nutritious fruits that contain vitamins, minerals and fiber. While enjoying the sweet flavor of fruit, you give your body essential materials that it needs for health.

If you want something sweet, organic sugar is almost always your best option. Just make sure you eat it in moderation!!!
